Easy French Toast Casserole Recipe (2)
  • Bread- We love using a cinnamon raisin bread. But you could also swap it out for cinnamon bagels or brioche too!
  • Brown Sugar- adds a caramelized texture (and flavor) to the bread.
  • Corn Syrup- used to keep the caramel soft and sweet.
  • Butter, Milk, Eggs- all used to create the classic french toast.

PRO TIP- We love making our own homemade vanilla extract, but if using store bought, be sure it’s pure extract, not imitation (for best flavor).

If baking immediately, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray 13×9 baking dish with non-stick spray. Set aside.

Make sugar syrup. In a small saucepan, melt butter with sugar and corn syrup. Whisk until fully combined and sugar has dissolved. Pour into the bottom of the greased baking dish.

FAQs

Is heavy cream or milk better for French toast? ›

A creamy custard is the key to incredible French toast, so skip the watery skim milk and go for whole milk or half-and-half. Straight heavy cream turns French toast into dessert, so lean that way if you're looking for decadence.

How to tell when French toast is done? ›

This allows you to sear the French toast without burning it, while ensuring it's fully cooked in the center. "You know when your French toast is done when the center is set and doesn't have a runny consistency once cut," Oliveira says.

What happens if you soak French toast too long? ›

Leaving the bread in the egg mixture for too long is another route to soggy French toast.

Are you supposed to toast bread before making French toast? ›

Use stale bread or toast the bread until it's golden-brown. It needs to be sturdy to hold up to the egg mixture. If the bread is fresh from the bag or you toast it too lightly, the finished dish will be soggy. Soak the toasted or untoasted bread for about 10 seconds per side to achieve the optimal texture.

Can you make French toast ahead of time and reheat? ›

Freezer and Make-Ahead Tips

Freeze cooked French Toast Casserole for up to three months. Remove it from the freezer the day before you want to serve it and let thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Cover the pan with foil, then reheat at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes or until warmed through.

Can I use oil instead of butter for French toast? ›

Tips. Use thick slices of bread and soak it just long enough to absorb the egg mixture but not so long that it becomes saturated. Shortening or oil can be used instead of butter when cooking the French toast.

How do I make my French toast less soggy? ›

You don't want to use too much milk. Your batter should be more egg-y than milk-y if you want non-soggy toast. Serve this spread with butter, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and fresh berries, or drizzle in in syrup for the best breakfast on earth.

What kind of bread works best for French toast? ›

For a solid French toast, aim for sturdy bread with a uniform texture and a soft crust. Hearty sandwich bread, brioche, challah, and shokupan (Japanese milk bread) are all great choices. Avoid rustic loaves with thick crusts or large holes in the interior.

Why does my French toast taste like eggs? ›

You're adding too much milk or too few egg yolks: Eggs and milk are the essential components of the custard base that gives French toast its tender richness—but get their ratio off and you'll wind up with undercooked slices that have an unpleasantly savory “scrambled eggs” flavor.

Why is my French toast not working? ›

Because you're cooking it with the Heat on too high. Pancakes should be done on medium-high heat, about 375. French toast needs to be set much lower, like eggs, about 325. This allows for the heat to penetrate through the thickness of the bread and cook the egg mixture all the way throug...

Why is my French toast falling apart? ›

The reason? "If you use fresh bread, it will soak up the [custard] so quickly that you run the risk of your French toast falling apart," explains Traci Weintraub, founder and head chef at Gracefully Fed. Alternatively, "slightly stale bread tends to hold up better in the liquid mixture," she says.

Why does my French toast taste bad? ›

Nail the Egg-to-Milk Ratio

Eggs and milk are the essential components of the custard base that gives French toast its tender richness—but get their ratio off and you'll wind up with undercooked slices that have an unpleasantly savory "scrambled eggs" flavor.
