M&M COOKIES

Before my sister had kids she would always say that she couldn’t WAIT to have kids so that she could “just sit on the couch all day eating bonbons” instead of having to go to work everyday.

I didn’t even go there. I knew that anything I tried to say to convince her thatbonbon popping wasn’t really what it’s all about, would be greeted with deaf ears.

So I waited…patiently…until she got married and had her first kid.

And then I waited untilshe had two.

Then I said, “Um…so how are those bonbons?”

By that point she couldn’t eat bonbons becauseher mouth was too fulleatingher own words.

Although motherhood is hard, I love the flexibility of doing whatever activities that I, CEO of Mommydom, decide to do each day. The coolest thing about motherhood is that I can make these cookies in the middle of the day with my kids just because…

They were perfectly chewy and stayed soft because of the addition of cream cheese to the batter. I think these will be my go to for plain chewy sugar cookies from now on.

Something draws kids to M&M cookies. If you put these on a plate with any other cookie, I guarantee your kid will choose this one.

Prep Time: 10 minutes mins

Cook Time: 10 minutes mins

Total Time: 20 minutes mins

Servings: 24 cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar, (plus 1/3 cup for rolling)
  • 2 oz cream cheese
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter,, melted and still warm
  • 1/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1-1 1/4 cups M&M's

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of sugar and cream cheese in a large bowl (no need to stir them together yet). Put the remaining 1/3 cup sugar for rolling in a pie plate/bowl and set aside. Pour the warm butter over the cream cheese mixture and stir to combine - the mixture won't be completely smooth yet, that's fine. Stir in the oil then the egg, milk and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

  • Use a rubber spatula to start folding the dry ingredients into the wet. When the dry ingredients are partially incorporated, add 3/4 cup of the M&M's to the dough. Continue mixing until a soft dough comes together. (Don't wait to add the M&M's until the dry ingredients are completely incorporated - you'll end up overmixing.)

  • Portion the dough onto the prepared baking sheets with a cookie scoop, using about 2 tablespoons for each cookie. Working quickly (if you handle the dough too much you're more likely to wind up with flat cookies), roll the dough into a ball with your hands then roll in the sugar set aside in the pie plate previously. Repeat until you've used all of the dough, placing 12 cookies on each baking sheet. Use the bottom of a glass to slightly flatten the dough balls into discs that are about 2 inches in diameter. Gently press 3 more M&M's into the top of each cookie. NOTE: Your M&Ms on top will crack from the heat while baking so I wait to put the M&Ms on top of the cookie until right after they come out of the oven. Just press how ever many your want on top right when they come out and they won't crack!

  • Bake the cookies, 1 tray at a time, for about 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set. Do not overbake. Remove from oven and press the M&Ms on top if you haven't already put them on top. The tops of the cookies will be puffy and slightly cracked. Transfer the baking sheet to a wire rack and let the cookies cool on the sheet for 5 minutes then transfer them to the rack to cool completely.

  • Makes about 24 cookies.

Great recipe! This is my DIL’s favorite cookie that I make. And I have a lot of good cookie recipes. I find chilling the dough for an hour keeps them from flattening and they come out thick and perfectly soft and chewy.

I made these just as you instructed, except I used salted butter because that’s all I had. I also used the brand new “Sugar Cookie M&Ms” that just came out this year. They turned out perfect!! Definitely add 2-3 M&Ms after they come out of the oven. They just look a lot better that way! My batch made about 33 cookies, not 24. I rolled them pretty big too! Thank you and Merry Christmas!

    • Christy Denney Reply

      Thank you!

These came out so good. I was looking for a way to use up some Andes candies. Chopped them up and substituted for M&M’s. Yum.

      Ooh sounds delicious.

The best recipe I have ever tried for M&M cookies I did substitute some wheat pastry flour and brown sugar. So prefect!

    • Christy Denney Reply

      So glad to hear that.

  7. Sally Guenterberg Reply

I would like them to be thicker like the m&m sugar cookies in the store. Mine turned out thin and flat. Maybe Ill try chilling the dough. And I couldnt get the cream cheese fully incorporated. Still had little pieces. That probably affected the finished product also.

    • Christy Denney Reply

Yes, that definitely affects the final product!

I am a stay at home mom of 1, but my little girl is only 14 months old. It is very challenging and I have heard from people who work and stay at home and try to do the other. Every ones response always seems to be staying at home is harder. People don’t understand if they are never in the position. Like why didn’t you get the entire house cleaned after doing laundry, volunteering, taking care of your daughter and so on. Or the days I don’t get to the dishes and bc she is literally hanging onto my leg jumping up and down… and it’s as if I did nothing the entire day and possibly the end of the world.
Cookies look yummy for only 2 oz of cream cheese(:

These are gorgeous. I love a good cookie and these would fill me up. I’ve was a stay at home mom for 24 years, I haven’t watched tv during the day, or eaten a bonbon in oh, about 23 years. People are so naive. You get what you put in. I love that you get creative with yours. I was the same way when mine were younger. Even now I like to do obscure fun things with them. And they’re old. I think if you spend time with them while they are little they tend to like to hang with you more when they aren’t so little any more.

I work from home and hear a lot of the same things. So much time on your hands, you can do whatever you want whenever you want, your house must be immaculate. But the truth is I work more hours in a week now that I am self-employed than I ever did working my 9-5 job. And even though I work from home I still have deadlines, conference calls, meetings, etc. So often times things like chores, errands and even my social life get put on the back burner and suffer. It is all a juggling act no matter what your day to day ‘job’ is. (Ok stepping off my soap box) These cookies look fabulous. I love a good chewy cookie and never thought to use cream cheese to achieve that effect. Can’t wait to try these!

    @Me,
It’s hard to figure it out. I think you’ve got to know your kids and what works for them. You are NOT failing. Sounds like they are happy at home so you are doing just what you should be doing. My boys have SO much energy that if we don’t go to a park or out somewhere they bounce off the walls. Then my sister tells me how her daughter colored for four hours. I think the longest my boys ever colored was 10 minutes. 🙂

  27. Me Reply

These look delicious! I am a stay-at-home mom of 2, and while I love it, I feel weird pressure on knowing how much is too much, and how little is too little. We need a little down time, and there are other mom’s in my neighborhood that love doing two playdates every single day. That’s too much for me, and then I wonder if I am failing my children in some way by doing less than others. But they are happy at home, and love playing here as well as going to story time’s, play dates, outings, etc. I think there is pressure on both sides of the stay-at-home/working issue, and it’s hard to keep the right balance. I don’t mean to get all serious, but this balance thing is something I think about daily because I haven’t quite figured it out:) Anyway. LOVE your blog and your writing! It always makes me laugh!:)

I made these and they are so great! Thanks for another fabulous recipe!!

  29. Megan Reply

I am anxious to try these. As a working mom of two children I just have to say kudos to stay at home moms. I think it is a super hard job. I am a teacher and get to be a stay at home mom a couple of months each year and it is hard. My girls and I discovered early on that it was best if I went to work and they went to daycare because we were all a lot happier! Bless those of you that do it full time. I am also fortunate enough to have some friends that stay at home so when I am in a “babysitter bind” they help me out. I always take them a meal, or some other token of appreciation, to let them know how thankful I am for taking on my girls when they already have kids of their own to watch!

  30. vanessalillian [Ness@theteensytinyinsignificantdetails] Reply

I love how bright and pretty they are so I can see why your kids make a beeline for them.

I’m not a mother myself but always found it odd/unfair that women who work full time are still expected to bring their kids to all the activities, keep the house tidy, cook, shop etc… what’s with that??

  31. Christy {The Girl Who Ate Everything} Reply

    @Heather,
So true. There has to be a happy medium between the two or we all go crazy!

  32. Heather Reply

I had a lazy butt day today. We never sit around and just watch movies, but I decided today we needed to just chill and it was a good thing. Can’t go all the time or will go crazy!!

  33. Shannon West Reply

Thank you for sharing this delicious looking recipe, I can’t wait to try it.

That is so fun that you took your kids geocaching. That is actually how my husband proposed to me so it definitely has special meaning for us as well!

My personal opinion is that working full time is much harder. Not only do I have to find time in the day to do the things you mentioned in your list, I also have to work full time, with an hour commute. Yes, staying home is challening, but if you didn’t get those cookies baked or a grasshopper caught by the deadline – no one is getting in trouble! I completely recpect stay at home mothers because kids are quite the challenge – but I have to say being a parent of a 4 and 5 year old and a full time career woman is extremely hard!!! I’m just spread so thin.

On another note – cookies look delish!

I have a 4 month old and stayed home with my baby for the first 6 weeks. I am so happy to be back at work. I have a one hour lunch that allows me to actually take my time eating and getting things done, like paying the bills, making that phone call to the insurance company or what have you. All luxeries that I did not have with a newborn whose naps never exceeded 10 minutes.

  37. Crystal Reply

These look great! I recently had my first baby and although I love him to pieces, I was definitely a bit relieved going back to work. I think being a stay at home mom is the hardest job there is. My mom stayed home with the three of us and now having my own child, I love and respect her even more than I did before!

Don’t even get me started on people’s perceptions of stay at home moms. I’ve been home for 8 years and have heard it all..

Also, people always assume you have time to watch their kids or run errands that they don’t have time to run. Since we’re not doing anything and all 😉
