The company, now known as “Natural Grocers,” was founded in 1955, but, the original name was “The Builder's Foundation.” Our first brick and mortar store opened in 1958 on West Colfax in Denver, CO.

The General Store.

James Read founded the company on June 11, 1946, in San Francisco, California. He bought government surplus food products and sold them in previously vacant stores throughout San Francisco. He named his new company Cannery Sales. In 1970, Cannery Sales acquired Globe of California and renamed it Canned Foods.

Two years later, John and Renee partnered with Craig Weller and Mark Skiles to merge SaferWay with their Clarksville Natural Grocery, resulting in the opening of the original Whole Foods Market on September 20, 1980.
